Art is a powerful form of storytelling that will always be
relevant. âArt is disarming,â says Sophia Lebessis, owner
of Transformation Fine Art. âNo matter what art form
it is, itâs disarming.â In our cover story, Lebessis further
expands on art's role in transformative learning. âYou might not
understand what youâre looking at, but thereâs an effect on you
and your conscience.â
Indigenous art, in all its forms, plays an important role in Truth
and Reconciliation. It allows for connection with Indigenous
cultures, histories and traditions. For Canadians genuinely
interested in Indigenous art and the story behind the creation,
Lebessis encourages âto go beyond what you learn in school,
start with techne, look for the essence that the carver (the artist)
was trying to capture,â before asking a thousand questions.
Indigenous artists take on the responsibility of sharing the
knowledge of the people and the communities they represent.
SAY Magazine is honoured to celebrate some of those creative
individuals in this issueâeach an expert in their chosen
mediums, an educator, and a role model for others.
During the long cold days of winter may the positive stories in
SAY Magazine warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.
Best wishes to all for a prosperous new year!
