The Awami League-led government, having almost completed three consecutive terms in power, faces significant challenges in the year of the national election. Despite achieving consistent economic growth over 15 years, driven by impressive infrastructure development, the government now grapples with a stressed power and energy sector, a dollar crisis, and soaring inflation. Notably, the power generation sector has seen commendable progress amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and achieved nationwide power access in 2021. However, gas production has declined significantly, and the nation's import dependency has risen to around 60%. The power supply crisis, exacerbated by fuel supply issues, has drawn intense criticism. Industries suffer production drops of 10-40%, prompting price hikes for energy to ease the strain of subsidies. However, substantial subsidies are still required. Critics attribute it to the absence of a comprehensive energy and power sector plan. At the same time, policymakers contend that global situations such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical events like the Western embargo on Russia have contributed to the turmoil. As the election year unfolds, stakeholders from researchers and journalists to political figures and civil society activists have transformed into vocal critics of the energy and power sector management.
The ruling party could have used the power sector successes in the year of the general election, but ensuring primary fuel supply has become a major challenge. However, there is no option now but to go for aggressive exploration of domestic energy resources, and tap solar potentials to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.

It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.

In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.

The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
