PayPal and Venmo are convenient ways to send money fast—no digging for cash, credit cards or checks. Like many online tools, however, they come with risks. Fortunately, you can keep your money safe without risking your privacy by following a few simple steps. Keep reading for pro tips to help you use these apps with confidence.
Tap into extra security easily
In your app settings, you have the option to add a second layer of protection to decrease the chance of your account getting breached, says Cliff Steinhauer, Director of Information Security and Engagement at the National Cybersecurity Alliance (StaySafeOnline.org). Here, simple ways to secure your payment apps.
Using PayPal? Get key savvy
Replace your password with a passkey—a secure digital key that grants access to your app once you unlock the phone with your PIN, fingerprint or face. This prevents hackers from getting into your PayPal account if they get a hold of your password. Keep in mind that if you stay logged into the app, PayPal won't ask you to authenticate again. So if you want to make your account even more secure, say, in case you lose your phone, log out after each use.
