SECRET DEMENTIA CLUES And what to do

|November 04, 2025
We all know about feeling forgetful or confused, but there are lesser-known signs. Here's what to watch for - and what to do about it
-
Changes in sight, hearing, taste and balance are little-known dementia signs that can start years before more well-known symptoms of forgetfulness and confusion, experts have warned. Here's what you need to know – and what you can do – to help yourself or your loved ones.
HEARING LOSSDementia may start to impair the senses years before a patient shows the classic signs. And several studies* suggest that using hearing aids may delay the onset and progression of the disease. It's thought that using hearing aids may cut the cognitive load on the brain and encourage more socialisation, which reduces the likelihood of dementia. So if you notice a change in hearing, get it checked by an audiologist and use hearing aids if recommended.
VISION PROBLEMS
Declining eyesight is normal as we age – the average age for needing reading glasses is 40. Still having issues reading text, even wearing specs? It might be worth telling your GP, says Dr Tim Beanland, head of knowledge and learning at Alzheimer's Society. 'Some people with dementia have difficulty judging distances or seeing edges clearly, causing trips or falls.'
