Multitasking, Caregiving & Cortisol

Modern life often demands women to juggle multiple roles simultaneously—professional responsibilities, caregiving, household duties, and social obligations—all under the guise of routine. Yet, beneath this seamless multitasking lies a biological cost: elevated cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone. Research increasingly shows that the mental load carried by women, particularly those between 25 and 55, contributes to chronic stress, which in turn has lasting health implications.

The Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN)—led by University of Pittsburgh—links caregiving-related stress with elevated cortisol levels, increasing the risk of hypertension and arterial dysfunction.
