HARRY is raking up old wounds and inflicting new ones in the process

As Harry's new book is released, it's the fight for the ownership of his mother's memory and reputation that is the saddest, writes royal biographer Emily Andrews

HARRY is raking up old wounds and inflicting new ones in the process

Perhaps one of the saddest pronouncements Prince Harry has made over the past couple of weeks (doesn't it feel longer?) is that he has very few memories of his mum.

Harry was 12, almost 13, when Diana was tragically killed in a Paris car accident in August 1997, while William was just 15.

The boys were about to be reunited with their mother after spending the summer holidays at Balmoral - but instead they were woken by Charles, who tearfully told them that they would never see her again.

Terrible fall-out

'I don't have many early memories of my mum,' said Harry. 'It was almost like internally I've blocked them out. But I always remember her laugh, her cheeky laugh. Her saying to me, "You can get into trouble, just don't get caught." In his autobiography, Spare, out this week, Harry has plenty more to say about his dear mum, surely bringing new upset for his older brother, Prince William, and dad, King Charles.

'It's likely to cause fresh trauma for William'
