In my twenties, it’s fair to say I wasn’t the best version of myself. I was flighty, self-centred and unwilling to stick at anything for terribly long. I wilfully chose the bright lights and the shiny things over mundane offices and boring duties.

I remember being taken to task by a good friend for leaving her waiting in a restaurant after we’d arranged to meet. I became distracted in a bar on the way to meet her and by the time I finally arrived, she’d been sitting at the table by herself for half an hour. She took the time to tell me I was rude, thoughtless and a bad friend before she left, and she was quite right to do so. It wasn’t the first time I’d kept her – and indeed, other friends – waiting.
