Tesla has taken a significant step toward fully autonomous ride-hailing by beginning limited Robotaxi operations in Austin, Texas without a human safety monitor in the vehicle.

TESLA STARTS ROBOTAXI RIDES WITHOUT SAFETY MONITORS IN AUSTIN

The move marks Tesla’s first real-world deployment of unsupervised autonomous rides on public roads, a milestone the company has pursued for years as it works to scale driverless transportation.

The initial rollout remains tightly controlled, but it signals a transition from testing to early commercial use. Tesla executives describe the launch as a data-driven phase designed to gradually increase autonomy while closely tracking safety and performance metrics.

AUSTIN BECOMES TESLA'S FIRST UNSUPERVISED ROBOTAXI MARKET

On January 22, 2026, Tesla began operating a small number of Robotaxis in Austin without a human safety driver or monitor in the front seat. CEO Elon Musk announced the milestone on X, sharing video footage that showed a vehicle navigating city streets with no visible operator.

Austin was selected in part because of its relatively flexible regulatory environment and Tesla's growing footprint in Texas. The city has also become a frequent testing ground for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicle programs, offering a mix of dense urban traffic, highways, and suburban routes that allow companies to validate systems across varied driving conditions.

The current Robotaxi fleet in Austin remains small. Tesla is operating fewer than 10 fully active Robotaxis within a broader pool of roughly 30 vehicles. Only a subset of those cars are running without safety monitors, with supervised and unsupervised vehicles sharing the same operating area.
