META SIGNALS MAJOR CUTBACKS TO METAVERSE SPENDING AS FOCUS SHIFTS TOWARD AI

Meta is preparing to scale back its metaverse budget significantly, planning reductions of up to 30 percent for 2026 as leadership reassesses where the company’s resources should be directed.

META SIGNALS MAJOR CUTBACKS TO METAVERSE SPENDING AS FOCUS SHIFTS TOWARD AI

The adjustments — still being finalized through Meta's internal annual planning cycle — are expected to affect Reality Labs, the unit responsible for virtual-reality hardware, augmented-reality projects and the Horizon Worlds social platform. Early indicators suggest that job cuts could follow as the restructuring moves forward in early 2026.

The shift marks one of the clearest signs yet that Meta is recalibrating after years of heavy investment in the metaverse. Despite substantial outlays and several generations of VR hardware, adoption has remained limited, and investors have continued to question the long-term payoff of a strategy centered on virtual worlds. This year's reallocation signals a move toward projects deemed more likely to generate near-term returns, most notably large-scale artificial intelligence initiatives and supporting infrastructure.

HOW META ARRIVED AT A TURNING POINT

Meta's pivot follows a multiyear period in which Reality Labs accumulated repeated operating losses — the byproduct of ambitious hardware development cycles and a metaverse vision that depended on widespread consumer adoption that has yet to materialize. The company's 2021 rebranding from Facebook to Meta symbolized an intent to lead the next stage of immersive computing, but that transition occurred as competition intensified in other areas, including generative Al and mobile hardware.
