You wake up to an eerily silent city. The hum of traffic has ceased and the only sound is the flutter of trash and detritus that is strewn along the streets.

Abandoned cars weakly flash hazard lights as the last of their batteries die out and a thin, grey veil of smoke hangs in the air. You reach for the bedroom lamp but the power is out, there's no running water for the morning shower and your smartphone is useless - SOS mode isn’t even functional.

Survival instincts kick in and it’s now a race to find something clean to drink, provide heat and make fire to eat whatever rations and tinned goods you can find.

It’s a rather bleak - and massively hypothetical - doomsday scenario, but there are all manner of things that pose a very real threat to humanity, be it another pandemic, flooding, solar flare, supervolcano eruption or simply Al deciding it has had enough of us and going all Terminator on our butts.

You don’t have to be a full-blown ‘prepper’ to be prepared, and there’s a long list of excellent tech out there that can help with a variety of survival scenarios, whether that’s dealing with a water shortage, staying connected during blackouts or sheltering from violent storms.
