01 GOPRO HERO3 BLACK

This is arguably the most iconic of GoPro's action cameras. It marked a huge technological leap over the HD Hero2 and confirmed the brand's status as the one to buy (or beat).

With the waterproofing and mounting options we've come to expect from GoPro, it became a tool for a huge range of consumers: something you could take on family holidays or use to capture your most exhilarating sporty moments.

Recognising that it had garnered such a diverse audience, GoPro offered three levels of the Hero3 lineup: White, Silver and Black editions. Each had a different megapixel count and framerate, and it was the Black that led the charge with a 12MP sensor capable of capturing better low-light footage and 30fps bursts of images.

It wasn't just about the shooting, though. This was the first GoPro with Wi-Fi to enable remote control, image preview, and even direct sharing.

That comes as standard in 2025, but 13 years ago it was unprecedented.
