How Cutting-Edge Innovations Have Enhanced the Viewer Experience and Improved Accuracy in Cricket

- Words By: Aadithya Harish

ALL THE TECH POWERING IPL 2025

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is not just a cricket tournament; it's a celebration of sport, culture, and entertainment. With millions of eyes glued to the screen, it has become the world's second most valuable league. The IPL's popularity is unmatched, and broadcasters are more than willing to pay staggering amounts to bring the action to our living rooms.

But what makes the IPL more than just a regular cricket match? It's technology. When the stakes are this high, broadcasters don't hold back in investing heavily in technological innovations that ensure accuracy while enhancing the viewer's experience. Let's take a closer look at the tools that have revolutionized the IPL and made it more exciting, fair, and visually engaging than ever before.

image1. DRS (Decision Review System)

Known for its precision, the Decision Review System (DRS) has changed how the game is officiated. While officially called DRS, it’s often humorously called the “Dhoni Review System” due to MS Dhoni’s impeccable ability to get reviews right. The DRS system utilizes various technologies such as ball tracking, Snickometer, front-foot technology, and smart bails. Ball tracking helps umpires judge close LBW calls, using high-definition cameras to track the ball’s trajectory. Smart bails, positioned on top of the stumps, glow when they make contact with the ball, assisting with run-out decisions. Meanwhile, introduced in 1999, the Snickometer detects if the ball has made contact with the bat, ensuring fairer and more accurate decisions.
