Government-backed initiative becomes the largest beneficiary of MeitY's INR 1,500 crore allocation, driving multilingual and multimodal AI innovation

BHARATGEN SECURES INR 988.6 CRORE FUNDING UNDER INDIAAI MISSION TO LEAD INDIA'S SOVEREIGN AI PUSH

In a major boost to India’s vision of building a sovereign AI ecosystem, BharatGen, the country’s first government-backed multimodal AI initiative, has secured a massive INR 988.6 crore funding under the IndiaAI Mission. The announcement, made by Union Minister of Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, at an event in New Delhi on September 18, 2025, marks a defining moment in India’s journey toward technological self-reliance in artificial intelligence.

The allocation makes BharatGen the largest beneficiary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's (MeitY) INR 1,500 crore IndiaAI fund, reaffirming the government's commitment to nurturing indigenous AI capabilities. The funding will accelerate the creation of trillion-parameter-scale multilingual and multimodal Large Language Models (LLMs) that cater to India’s unique linguistic and cultural diversity.

Building the Foundation of Sovereign AI

With this strategic investment, BharatGen aims to design and deploy AI systems capable of powering applications across agriculture, healthcare, finance, governance, and education—sectors that form the backbone of India’s development priorities. The initiative aligns closely with IndiaAI Mission's goals of creating ethical, inclusive, and scalable AI solutions that can be deployed across both government and enterprise ecosystems.
