Renewables at scale demand deeper investments

The growing penetration of renewables into the power ecosystem has raised concerns about grid stability, but has benefited the renewable industry as a whole. The concerns can be addressed through collective efforts by stakeholders and through increasing investment in the sector. Akshay Hirandani from Serentica Renewables expresses his opinion.

How is India integrating RE sources into the national grid while maintaining stability and reliability?

As India's renewable capacity has grown, we have seen several important steps from the national grid to maintain stability, from accelerating transmission build-out to introducing tenders that mandate storage, both standalone and hybrid. These are welcome moves that recognise the need for flexibility as renewables scale. However, alongside this progress, a noticeable rise in compliance requirements is seen, placed almost entirely on renewable generators. Strengthening grid discipline is essential and widely supported. A reliable grid is a shared objective. But the current approach tends to push every new requirement, often introduced with limited notice, onto IPPs alone. What this reflects is a system still learning and evolving, and developers are disproportionately bearing the cost of that learning.
