Microsoft is bracing for another round of layoffs in its gaming division, with managers expecting significant reductions across Xbox teams.

XBOX FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE AMID NEW LAYOFFS

The cuts, part of a broader company reorganization, follow three prior waves totaling over 2,550 jobs lost since the $69 billion Activision Blizzard acquisition. Most of the latest reductions target corporate and support roles, particularly at Activision Blizzard, though some mobile game teams, like those behind Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Warcraft Rumble, face downsizing as they shift to live operations. No games, devices, or studios are being canceled, but the scale of the layoffs has raised alarms about Xbox's direction.

imageThe gaming division, which includes Bethesda, Obsidian, and 343 Industries, employs about 22,000 people. Earlier cuts hit hard, with 1,900 jobs slashed in January and 650 in September, alongside the closure of acclaimed studios like Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. The latest layoffs, affecting roughly 3% of the workforce, aim to streamline operations post-acquisition, focusing on sustainable growth. Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, emphasized in a memo that the cuts align resources with long-term goals, though specifics on affected teams remain unclear.

imageThe news has sparked concern among employees and analysts. The gaming industry has faced relentless layoffs, with Sony, Riot Games, and Epic Games cutting thousands since the post-pandemic boom. Microsoft's repeated reductions, despite strong gaming revenue driven by Activision Blizzard's titles like Call of Duty, suggest pressure from the C-suite to boost profit margins. The lack of transparency about Xbox’s financials fuels speculation about whether the division can maintain its ambitious scope.
