We get the lowdown on helmet lifespan from leading manufacturers Giro and Specialized

How often should I replace my helmet?

When we find a good helmet, we tend to stick with it, and for many of us, if a helmet doesn't show obvious signs of wear, it might be some time before we get around to replacing it.

But how long should we use one for?

Bike helmets are a single-use safety item. Every manufacturer will tell you to retire a helmet straight after an accident. Sometimes, the damage won't be obvious, but the advice remains the same. If you crash your helmet, get a new one.

Giro, the helmet manufacturer, agrees:

“If you fall and the helmet is impacted, you should have the helmet inspected or replace it immediately, even if no damage is visible,” said Cam Price, Giro's Marketing Manager.

“Helmet liners are made to absorb energy from impacts, through their own degradation or destruction - like an airbag in a car. If the liner is compromised from an impact or other factors, it may not offer the full protective capability it was designed to provide.”

We asked Specialized for its advice and they also struck a cautious tone.

“Every accident or drop where the helmet is impacted is unique, and we cannot determine the severity of these events,” Specialized said. “Nor is it evidently apparent that any damage has occurred. Therefore, we recommend that you replace your helmet if it has experienced an impact.”
