Why is Windows so bad at estimating file transfers?

TIME AT THE BAR

Humankind’s greatest achievements are tricky to rank in a list format, but few would argue that the ISS 96-97 patch for eFootball PES 2021 which adds all the teams from the 1996-97 season would be right up there. Multiple generations of Adidas Predators. Glorious, billowing kits in colours no manufacturer would dream of pairing today. Even the goalie gloves are era-authentic. It’s a towering achievement that’s way easier to understand than Stonehenge, more enjoyable than penicillin, and a whole lot cheaper than space travel. It's also an entirely fan-made project, authored by a collective that goes by the same name as the patch itself (@IssPes97 on Twitter, if you're interested). And that means two things: an outrageous install size, and a wholly sub-optimal means of downloading and installing it.

AGONISINGLY SLOWLY

As PC gamers, we've all been there at some point. An 18-part, 150GB zip file, downloaded agonisingly slowly from a file transfer site that would really like you to pay to subscribe and avoid its arbitrary hourly download limits. And then, after what feels like years, a gargantuan compressed file that takes just as long again to extract anywhere. And, the real kicker: Windows lying to you about how long it'll take.
