If The Guns of Navarone is the best war film ever made, The Sound of Music the best musical film, then The Magnificent Seven is the western of westerns.

Released in 1960, it was directed by John Sturges and is a remake - in an Old West-style - of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai.

The plot is simple: a group of seven gunfighters is hired to protect a small village in Mexico from marauding bandits led by Eli Wallach's Calvera.

I can take or leave a western. My late dad loved them and I grew up watching John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies. I recognise the quality of The Searchers and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and can sing, badly, Do Not Forsake Me from High Noon.
