Drunk driver passed out at wheel of vehicle

A drunk driver passed out at the wheel as his van careered downhill in Motherwell and crashed into a traffic island.

David McLindon, who miraculously escaped serious injury, was so intoxicated that witnesses and police officers couldn't rouse him.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard his runaway vehicle reached speeds of between 30 and 40 miles an hour.

McLindon, 38, of Cambuslang, narrowly avoided prison after he admitted driving dangerously while unfit through drink or drugs.

It happened in the early hours of August 16.

Jack Muir, prosecuting, said a motorist noticed McLindon driving "erratically" on the M74 and followed him off the motorway at junction 6.
