Promote Cornish culture at historic sites, say MPs

MEMBERS of Parliament in Cornwall have cosigned a letter to Historic England calling for greater recognition of Cornwall's culture and heritage.

The letter from South East Cornwall Labour MP Anna Gelderd to the chief executive of Historic England says Cornwall's unique culture, language and history should be promoted at historic sites.

The letter, signed by Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs from every Cornish constituency, raises concerns over a “significant educational gap” in how Cornwall's story is presented, particularly for younger generations.

It argues that while many Cornish schoolchildren visit Norman or Tudor castles, they are far less likely to encounter Cornwall’s own early heritage, including courtyard houses, decorated crosses and early Christian oratories - and that when they do, there is often limited educational provision to bring these sites to life.
