DIVE surveys which aim to monitor vital kelp forests will be launched in the estuary waters of two Cornish rivers this month.

Natural England says it is returning to the Fal and Helford rivers to check on the health and size of the region's kelp forest communities, which play an important role in supporting marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems.

Last carried out in 2012, the survey will also seek to track changes, inform conservation action and help safeguard the long-term future of these habitats.

Providing shelter, food and nursery grounds for a wide range of marine species including fish, crustaceans and molluscs; Natural England adds that kelp forests face threats from “poor water quality, displacement by invasive nonnative species, damage through human activities and climate change”.
