'Fantastic' City cruise to win over Peterborough

EXETER City produced a fantastic performance as they were cruised to victory over a desperately poor Peterborough United side at St James Park on Saturday.

- DANIEL CLARK

The Grecians were on top throughout as goals from Jayden Wareham and a Josh Magennis double gave them a thoroughly warranted 3-0 win.

Wareham opened the scoring with his second goal for the club on the half hour. The striker found space in the box and his first-time finish rifled into the back of the net after good work for Jake Doyle-Hayes.

City were on top and midway through the second half made that count as they doubled the lead. Ilmari Niskanen’s cross was met by Josh Magennis and the captain nodded in the second. Three minutes later it was three and again it was Magennis on the scoresheet, heading home again, this time from a Ryan Rydel cross.

Exeter had chances to make it even more emphatic but nine points from six games moved them into the top half of the League One table, sitting 11th. Posh’s miserable start continued as they remained rock bottom with just a single point, their winless run stretching to 13 pages dating back to April.

"I thought we were good right from the start," manager Gary Caldwell said. "I thought our out of possession game really put them under pressure, it was really aggressive and we put a lot of energy into the first half and set the tone for the game.

"I thought we could have been more in front at halftime and 1-0 was a risky scoreline and in the second half, we were more pragmatic with how we pressed, we sat in a block more, but the understanding of how we could win the game was great and then we hit two goals from crosses that we have been working on this week and from then on in, it was comfortable.
