AUCTION EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Looking back over 40 years in the property industry, I’ve seen many changes. On a recent visit to New Zealand, I was surprised to learn that most of their property transactions are carried out using the auction method.
At Marchand Petit, we still pride ourselves on the fact that we believe a live auction, held in a room with interested parties, can produce the best results, while ensuring a sale within a sixto-eight-week period.
Last month proved the point once again with the sales of Rose Cottage, a lovely three-bed home in Slapton, and The Priory at Kingswear. Rose Cottage, having failed to sell by private treaty through another agent, sold before auction and above the guide price of £285,000.
The Priory was an exceptional auction prop-
erty, situated just off the public slipway. After six weeks of intense marketing, our sales team had a number of interested parties, and it was clear that auction would deliver the right outcome.

Is British society equal? The clues are in the titles
I HAVE no wish to detract from the pride and pleasure which recipients of the latest New Year honours must feel, but the annual announcement always depresses me, and not because I've been overlooked yet again; if I still hope one day to be offered some royal bauble it’s only because I'd relish the opportunity to refuse it, joining a far more select and noble band which includes Alan Bennett, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, George Bernard Shaw, Danny Boyle (who said the honours system “just makes me vomit”), Stephen Hawking, Michael Faraday, TE Lawrence, JG Ballard (“the honours system is a Ruritanian charade that helps to prop up the top-heavy monarchy”), Virginia Woolf, JB Priestley, WH Auden and the historian AJP
