Here, National Trust Cymru pick their top 10 winter walks at the places they care for across Wales. Choose from rugged headlands, wildlife watching or spectacular viewpoints – find the named trail and map on the Trust's website and off you go...
1. ERDDIG RIVERSIDE WALK
Erddig Hall and Garden, Wrexham
Starting at the redbrick dovecote, this short 1.5-mile (2.4km) circular walk is perfect for a frosty day. The charming 18th-century Cup and Saucer water feature, the winding River Clywedog and towering trees of Big Wood all make for an enjoyable winter walk. Look out for the Wat's Dyke, a bank and ditch earthworks that predates its larger cousin, Offa's Dyke.
2. RHOSILI HEADLAND WALK
Rhosili, Gower Peninsula
Breathtaking Rhosili bay with its dramatic cliffs and sweeping golden sands is a firm favourite for a brisk walk. This 3.5-mile (5.6km) trail takes you out along the coast to the Coastguard lookout where, on a clear day, you can spot the tidal island of Worms Head. The name comes from the Nordic word 'wurm' meaning serpent or dragon and reflects the shape of the headland.
3. THE OLD GOLF WALK
Chirk Castle and Garden, Wrexham
