DR CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON Head of the Vaccine Preventable Disease Programme
-
IT’S that time of year again when the weather drives us back inside and respiratory viruses begin to spread.
One of those viruses is flu (influenza).
Flu is unpleasant for most people, but for those with health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease, it can lead to serious complications and hospitalisation.
For instance, adults with chronic liver disease are more than 48 times more likely to experience serious outcomes from flu.
Those with weakened immune systems face a risk more than 45 times higher than the general population.
