Mike Bubbins tells Marion McMullen why his comedy creation, a thawed-out '70s PE teacher, is not all that different from his real self

IKE Bubbins says his fashion sense mirrors his sitcom character Tony Mammoth.

PE teacher Tony was frozen in the 1970s after being caught in an avalanche during a school trip. He was discovered and thawed out in the 2020s for a second chance of life.

The first series saw him trying to pick up where he left off and Mammoth returns for more mayhem on Monday.

Barry-born Mike both stars and co-writes the comedy and champions the 1970s era and fashions.

He says: “A woman on the Tube in London told me how much she enjoyed Mammoth. She thought I was on my way to filming until I explained this is what I wear in real life. Because Mammoth’s wardrobe and my wardrobe are probably 95% similar and his look is 100% my look.

“I get spotted a lot. My moustache is very distinctive, and people spot the moustache and see the face and put two and two together. It's like having a flashing beacon under my nose.”

The comedy celebrates the ‘70s and Mike got to indulge his love of the era's styles. “The double denim! Denim shirt/jacket with zipper and denim jeans. Lindsay, who does the costume on Mammoth, is a genius. I also really love a red and black snakeskin shirt which she found. It was a bit tight for me, but she sewed in some panels to make it look even better and fit me.
