Residents’ anger at ‘senseless vandalism’ to medieval stones

VANDALS have sparked fury after carving their names into iconic medieval stepping stones, seemingly with a piece of machinery.

‘The stones are part of a much-loved walk in Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend.

Residents say they are “really angry” about the damage to the 41 slabs, which cross the Ewenny River.

‘They lie adjacent to the 12th-century Ogmore Castle.

The ancient monument is listed as being “of national importance” but in recent days, the names Patrick, Lily and Liana, have been cut into three of the stones.

Cadw, the body which preserves and protects Welsh heritage, said it was “deeply disappointed and saddened by this deliberate and mindless damage”

It is now being investigated as a heritage crime by South Wales Police. Cadw said it is appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information about the identities of “Patrick, Lily and Liana”.
