Lorry driver not guilty of causing death of cyclist

A LORRY driver who knocked down a cyclist in a collision which claimed the life of the rider has been found not guilty of causing her death.

Nicolette Lewis' bike was struck from behind by an HGV being driven by John Evans as she rode on the A476 near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire in October 2023 and she was "thrown" into a roadside ditch.

Despite the best efforts of motorists and paramedics, the 52-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following Mrs Lewis' death, her family described her as a "beautiful mother and wife" and a "wonderful soul".

Mr Evans denied causing the death of Mrs Lewis by careless driving, saying he was temporarily "blinded" by low sun and did not see the cyclist ahead of him.

The 62-year-old driver was found not guilty at Swansea Crown Court yesterday following a three-day trial.

The court had previously heard Mrs Lewis was a "strong and experienced" cyclist who was a member of a local cycling club.

At around 4.45pm on October 9, 2023, her husband Andrew saw her on her regular evening ride as he was driving home - but that would be the last time the couple saw each other.
