NEWPORT County manager David Hughes praised the “grit, spirit and determination” of his players as they fought back from a goal down to end a six-match losing run with a draw at Tranmere Rovers.

Hughes hails spirit after Exiles end miserable run

Substitute Courtney Baker-Richardson’s sublime volley in the 87th minute earned what Hughes felt was a deserved point at Prenton Park.

The Exiles boss was delighted to halt the slide down the League Two table and stay out of the bottom two.

But he wants more.

“Pleased is an understatement,” admitted Hughes.

“I thought the performance warranted a (positive) result.

“The first 30 minutes we were outstanding, we controlled the game for large spells and we created opportunities, even if we didn’t capitalise on those moments as much as we should have done.”
