Healthy diet warning over weight loss drug

FOCUSING too much on losing weight instead of improving dietary habits will not help tackle obesity in the long term, a leading nutrition expert has warned.

Professor Tim Spector, a genetic epidemiologist and creator of the nutrition app Zoe, told The Times he is concerned the NHS and UK Government are failing to educate patients on nutrition.

It follows health secretary Wes Streeting's decision in October 2024 to introduce new weight-loss medicines, such as Mounjaro, to tackle obesity and ease the costs to the health service.

"If we only obsess over weight, then we're missing half the problem," Prof Spector, 67, told The Times.

"We're not being taught about the quality of food that we're eating.
