Flat-dwellers flee after burst pipe causes flood

MORE than 40 people fled their flats and emergency crews were called after a 12-storey block of flats in Swansea flooded.

A resident of Strand Court in the city centre said water gushing down through the building poured through light fittings, affected the electricity supply and put lifts out of action.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the flood was caused by a burst pipe on the ninth floor of the block, which is run by the Beacon Housing Association.

A number of disabled residents, including some in wheelchairs, had to be helped to safety by neighbours after the leak started at about 3.30pm on Saturday, November 29.

One man is understood to have jumped from a ground-floor window as water poured through his ceiling.
