The former Reform UK and UKIP leader in Wales was jailed after taking bribes to make pro-Russian statements in the European parliament and on Ukrainian media. Court correspondent Philip Dewey reports
Disgraced politician Nathan Gill made pro-Russian statements on Ukrainian television in damning interviews in which he criticised Ukrainian President Zelenskyy.
He had been bribed to make the statements in exchange for money and has now been jailed for 10 years and six months.
The former leader of Reform UK and UKIP in Wales pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery after he received payment in return for making statements in favour of pro-Russian media outlets in Ukraine.
Gill was stopped by police at Manchester Airport on September 13, 2021, under schedule three of the Counter Terrorism and Borders Security Act 2019. Messages from Gill's devices were compiled by a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation team and matched up with material where Gill had made corresponding statements, some of which appeared in Ukranian media.
