Champs suffer shock loss in opening clash

ST Fagans suffered a shock defeat as they launched the defence of their South Wales Premier Cricket League title.

The Stags went down by 15 runs in their opening encounter of the season at Bridgend Town.

The hosts scored 248-9 in their 50 overs with Alex Peirson making 54 and opening partner Sam Wood 47. Zac Williams took 4-45.

It proved enough as the Stags were restricted to 233-7.

Aaron Davies bagged five wickets for Bridgend, with Jeremy Lawlor (66) and skipper Owen Morgan (45) briefly giving the visitors hope of reaching their target.

Swansea, champions two years ago, went down by eight wickets at home to Pontarddulais.

The hosts were all out for 150 as Iestyn Rees and Oliver Rogers both claimed three wickets.

Lewis Edwards then struck nine boundaries in an unbeaten 66 to see Bont to victory with more than 13 overs to spare.

Newport made the perfect start to the season by beating Cardiff by 10 wickets.

The capital side were all out for 147 with Kameel Sahabdeen taking 3-15.

Sam Wyatt led the Cardiff rearguard with 34.

But Newport's openers made short work of their target, easing home in the 28th over.
