A Wales where everyone belongs – our commitment to disabled people's rights

Here, social justice secretary Jane Hutt explains the consultation on the Disabled People's Rights Plan and why the Welsh Government is keen to hear as many voices as possible, especially those with lived experience
-
I'M PROUD to share our draft 10-year Disabled People's Rights Plan, an ambitious, long-term vision for a Wales where disabled people can live, work and thrive without facing the entrenched barriers that have excluded too many for too long.
In communities across Wales, disabled people encounter obstacles daily - whether trying to access education, find suitable employment, secure appropriate housing, or use public transport. These aren’t mere inconveniences but fundamental injustices that prevent full participation in society.
The draft plan focuses on several key themes: including improving physical accessibility across Wales; ensuring economic inclusion and tackling the unacceptable pay disparity gap; enhancing access to public services, promoting the right to independent living, and embedding disability rights across all government policy.
From the start, this plan has been shaped by disabled people themselves.
Our Disability Rights Taskforce brought together 350 people with lived experience and expertise and allies to identify the challenges faced in everyday life and to co-produce a variety of recommendations. We'll establish an External Advisory Board, led by disabled people, to hold the government accountable for delivery and implementation.
But we know there are many more voices to hear, which is why this consultation is so important.
