This year marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) on May 8. It is an opportunity for the nation to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth, through a series of events and activities. Sue Kemp takes a look at some being held in the Mid Devon area

Celebrations to mark VE Day

BELLS rang out on Tuesday, May 8, 1945 following the unconditional surrender of Germany and bringing to an end the war in Europe after five years of conflict that claimed tens of millions of lives.

While the war with Japan continued until VJ Day on August 15, 1945, VE Day in Europe sparked mass celebrations as nations rejoiced at liberation from tyranny and the unending toil of years of war.

Eight decades later, the 80th anniversary will be marked with events right across the UK and Europe, with most towns and parishes in Mid Devon hosting various celebrations from street parties to music and lighting beacons. Here are some being held in Mid Devon.

TIVERTON

On May 8 the mayor and local councillors will attend a flag raising ceremony outside Phoenix House at 9am. There will also be a small wreath laying up at Peoples Park at 11am, which has been organised by the Royal British Legion.

HEMYOCK

Hemyock will celebrate starting with a service at St Marys Church on Sunday, May 4, at 11am, to which all are welcome.
