IT HAS been an odd build-up to today’s goodbye to Goodison Park.

First, the announcement that the 133-year-old stadium would not be demolished - but would become home to Everton FC Women.

This was seen as an extremely positive move, but sections of the fan base were unimpressed with the plan.

They were about to say farewell to a stadium that was going nowhere.

And then the news that the home of the men’s first team has, after a sponsorship deal, been named. It's the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

For what they hope will be an iconic venue, not an iconic-sounding name.
