KIM-1 Biomarker May Predict Kidney Failure

CKD can be diagnosed using blood and urine tests, but it offers limited insight into how the disease will progress over time.

Interestingly, a new study revealed that a series of biological signals can predict how CKD is likely to progress in the future.
The study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology titled "Biomarkers Of Kidney Failure And All-Cause Mortality In CKD" found that higher levels of Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM 1), which is a special marker of kidney damage in the blood and urine, are associated with a higher risk of mortality and kidney failure.
Researchers examined the blood and urine of 2,884 adults with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) for 48 months to track outcomes like kidney failure and all-cause mortality.
