DPCC REPORTS FLAG RISE IN YAMUNA POLLUTION LEVELS
The Sunday Guardian
|March 22, 2026
Rising BOD levels highlight worsening pollution crisis in Delhi's Yamuna stretch.
Two recent water quality reports released by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee have highlighted a significant increase in pollution levels in the Yamuna River, raising fresh concerns over the river's deteriorating health in the national capital.
According to the findings, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels—a key indicator of organic pollution—have risen sharply across multiple monitoring points in New Delhi. In several stretches, BOD levels have been recorded far above the prescribed standard of 3 mg/l for bathing-quality water, with some locations reporting levels exceeding 30 mg/1.
The reports indicate that the situation has worsened in recent months compared to late 2025 data, pointing to a declining trend in water quality.
