Who: Shridar Mani, 38, co-artistic director of homegrown arts company The Opera People. The group has been staging contemporary takes on the art form sometimes seen as stuffy and inaccessible.

- Ong Sor Fern Arts Editor

The company’s grand finale for its 2025 season is the Singapore premiere of German composer Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride, directed by Tan Shou Chen. Featuring Felicia Teo Kaixin as Iphigenie, Edward Kim as Oreste and Jonathan Charles Tay as Pylade, the show is on at the Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre @ Wild Rice on Oct 10 and 12.

“I am reading Mother Mary Comes To Me (2025) by Indian author Arundhati Roy. I have been a big fan of her work since I first read The God Of Small Things (1997) two decades ago, so I always pick up new writing from her.

I was particularly intrigued by this one because it’s a personal memoir of her life in relation to her mother.
