National, club mates among those at the funeral of Reds player as fans pay tribute
-
LONDON - Mohamed Salah said the death of Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota in a car crash had left him "frightened" to return to the club, as football stars joined family and friends at the emotional funeral and devastated fans swarmed to Anfield to pay their respects.
The 28-year-old Portugal forward and his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, died in the early hours of July 3 after their car veered off a motorway in Spain and burst into flames.
The private service at a chapel in their home town Gondomar near Porto on July 5 was conducted by the bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, while hundreds of residents gathered outside.
A number of teammates from the national side, including Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Danilo Pereira and Joao Felix, as well as coach Roberto Martinez attended the funeral, though national skipper Cristiano Ronaldo was not present.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk bore a garlanded wreath of red flowers in the form of a jersey bearing Jota's No. 20. Other attendees include Liverpool manager Arne Slot and players such as Joe Gomez and Alexis Mac Allister.
