French Star Headline Act In UK Sprint Cup Feature

Haydock Park Group 1 sees 22 entries, with the Reynier-trained 4YO Lazzat as favourite

HAYDOCK - French star Lazzat remains in contention for the £400,000 (S$695,000) Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock Park on Sept 6, after the five-day declaration stage.

The Jerome Reynier-trained gelding is the current favourite at 9-4 among the 22 nominees for the 1,200m feature.

The Territories four-year-old staved off Japanese galloper Satono Reve by half-a-length to score at his second-last start in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) at Royal Ascot on June 21.

Lazzat then produced an excellent run in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest (1,300m) at Deauville on Aug 10, losing no marks when finishing second to Sajir, who handed legendary French trainer Andre Fabre his first success in a rare elusive event on home soil.

The winner of eight races from 12 starts, including four at Group level, Lazzat faces a competitive field in the Sprint Cup. They include the Group 1 July Cup (1,200m) surprise winner No Half Measures, Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) heroine Time For Sandals and Group 3 Summer Stakes (1,200m) victor Sayidah Dariyan.
