Birbhum district requires about two and a half lakh tonnes of paddy for its own consumption. The additional crop will be sold through the public distribution system (PDS) in the four districts of West Burdwan, Howrah, Purulia, and Bankura.
This was finalised at a high-level meeting held at the district headquarters of Siuri, which was attended by the principal secretary of the state food and supplies department, Parvez Ahmed Siddiqui; the District Magistrate of Birbhum, Bidhan Roy; rice mill owners; and other top officials.
