TMC MLA Humayun softens stand, assures adherence to party discipline

The Trinamul Congress (TMC) parliamentary disciplinary committee, headed by Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, on Tuesday instructed the party's MLA, Humayun Kabir, to refrain from making controversial remarks that violate party discipline.

Today, Mr Kabir, the ruling party's legislator from the Bharatpur constituency in Murshidabad district, appeared in person before the committee. This followed Mr Chattopadhyay's directive on Monday for him to meet the committee members and clarify his stance on statements made against the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari, regarding his alleged diatribe against Muslim MLAs of the ruling party.

In addition to Mr Chattopadhyay, who serves as the chairman of the committee and parliamentary affairs minister, senior ministers Firhad Hakim and Chandrima Bhattacharya were also present at the meeting as committee members.

On Saturday, Mr Kabir submitted his response to Mr Chattopadhyay, stating that he would not apologise for his remarks about Mr Adhikari, the BJP MLA from Nandigram in East Midnapore district. However, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with Mr Kabir's reply to the show-cause notice issued by Mr Chattopadhyay on Thursday.
