Rameswaram fishers begin indefinite strike to condemn arrests by Sri Lankan Navy, stay away from sea

Various fishermen associations at Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu _ has commenced an indefinite strike, which entered the second day today, condemndng the frequent arrests and attacks on TN fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel and demanding their immediate release.

The mechanised boat owners, who had embarked on a strike since yesterday, have anchored their boats at the shore and stayed away from venturing into the sea, urging the State and the Central governments to find apermanent solution to this vexatious issue.

Reports said the owners over 700 mechanised trawlers have been anchored on the shore at the Rmeswaram jetty to condemn the frequent arrests.

The strike has affected more than one lakh people associated in fishing and was expected to cause a loss of about Rs 6-7 crore per day, reports said.
