Manufacturing PMI slips to 54.2 as export demand weakens

India's manufacturing sector expanded at its slowest pace in three months in June, as softer international demand weighed on new orders, output, hiring and purchasing activity, according to a private survey released on Wednesday.

The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, fell to 54.2 in June from 55.0 in May. The reading was also lower than the flash estimate of 54.5 released last month.
A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below 50 signals contraction. June marked the 56th consecutive month of expansion in India's manufacturing activity.
The survey showed that although both output and new orders continued to grow, the pace of expansion weakened significantly during the month.
