Winged Voyagers: The Story and Significance of World Migratory Bird Day

Winter is approaching and so is the season of migratory birds. These winged wonders face a host of dangers as they fly from country to country, over forests and mountains and across oceans and deserts. This report looks at how we can work together to combat the threat.

They are big. They have sharp curved structures in front of their eyes, making them formidable hunters, and capable of taking down other life forms big and small. They have sharp talons that could rip a young fawn. Yet they can be gentle, hovering around flowers, flying from plant to plant in search of nectar. They could be seen perched on the branch of a tree, clasping a seed with its legs and trying to open the hard seed coat. Our winged friends are flying everywhere around us. World Migratory Bird Day is officially celebrated on the second Saturday of May in Canada and the US, and the second Saturday of October in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. However, every day is Bird Day; you can celebrate birds and host events any day of the year!

This year, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) focuses on transforming our cities, villages, towns, and communities into bird-friendly spaces. WMBD will raise awareness on the challenges faced by migratory birds due to human activities and expanding urban development. The campaign will advocate for strategic urban planning and conservation efforts, which incorporate bird-friendly practices, ensuring our communities become bird havens. The 2025 theme encourages action from national and local government sectors, businesses, community groups, and individuals worldwide.

What does "bird-friendly" mean?

"Bird-friendly" means making our environment safe, welcoming and conducive for birds. We can sow native plants; provide clean water, and avoiding the use of harmful chemicals. By creating and protecting shared spaces, we can help birds on their long journeys and make our communities more beautiful and healthy. Throughout the year, we will explore various actions communities can undertake to make their space more bird-friendly.
