South Africa deserves a Soweto Derby thriller, 90s style
The Star
|April 30, 2025
Stadium on Saturday then!
GIVE us a thriller please!
I am thinking of a high-scoring Soweto Derby in the mould of that five-goal affair from way back in 1990. Damn, we can do with having the first hat-trick since Jerry Sikhosana pierced Brian Baloyi's web in 1996.
The local game deserves a scintillating encounter from the biggest and most supported clubs in the country this weekend, right?
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates take each other on in a high-stakes Betway Premiership encounter that cannot be anything like the recent 'safety first' offerings they've treated us to. Both clubs need the points like the desert needs the rains and they should thus go at it hammer and tongs.
Amakhosi cannot afford yet another failure to finish in the Top 8, while the Buccaneers can still pull the rug from underneath Mamelodi Sundowns' feet and win the championship.
Everything to play for at the FNB
Forget that there is a Nedbank Cup final awaiting the two in Durban next weekend. That's a bridge to be crossed when they get to.
Forget, too, that they both suffered defeats this past weekend. That’s water under the bridge.
