The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has once again proven to be a polishing arena for musical brilliance, showcasing both established and emerging talents.
Among the standout acts of last year's event was the dynamic DJ J.A.B J.A.W, whose real name is Lulamile Mdlalose.
His performance on the Manenberg stage was not just another gig; it was a celebration of local music infused with international flair.
Reflecting on his experience at this prestigious festival, he expressed his admiration for the platform it provides to South African artists.
“I love Cape Town International Jazz Festival, especially for what it does for local music by pairing it up with international acts,” he told Independent Media Lifestyle.
“It's emphasised the festival's vital role in promoting not only established artists but also up-and-coming talents.
“It's a festival that has to be here for a long time and I love it,” he continued.
For the DJ, performing at the festival was a dream come true. Known for his open-format DJ style, he took full advantage of the enthusiastic crowd, showcasing some of his signature “party tricks” infused with commercial vibes.
“The response was wonderful,” he recounted, reflecting on a memorable moment when he performed a live mash-up of iconic South African songs alongside Nduduzo Makhathini, Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, Mango Groove, Kelvin Momo and even Beyoncé. “I'll never forget that moment.”
The DJ articulated his desire to mentor performers like himself, those who are willing to bring creativity and spontaneity to the stage.
He mentioned the festival was akin to performing on an international platform, a sentiment that resonates with many artists who have had the privilege to showcase their craft in front of such a discerning audience.
Mdlalose said the unforgettable amount of passion and common music for passion that permeated the venue, he urged South Africans to attend the festival.
