Wycombe came under enormous pressure from the hosts early on as two attempts at goal were blocked and a third, from Marvin Johnson, arrowed a yard past a post.

Wycombe's most effective player, Fred Onyedinma, then showed just how he can motor forward on the right as he sped past Connor Hall and caused a slight moment of alarm which was averted.

Heneghan was booked for what looked like just a strong tackle after 13 minutes and three minutes later, Wycombe should have scored.

Paton gave the ball away and Wanderers broke when Onyedinma was sent away down Vale’s left.

When the wing-back squared the ball it seemed a formality for Cauley Woodrow to smash the opener but his shot was tipped over by the athletic Joe Gauci.

It was a let-off for Vale as statistics show that, bar one exception, when they concede first they don’t win.

Moments later, Cole fed Paton inside the Wycombe penalty box and the forward side-footed wide from a good position.

Paton then cracked wide after a free-kick from Johnson was nodded into his path by Cameron Humphreys.

George Hall and Ben Garrity had shots from distance charged down in what looked like a shoot-on-sight policy.

But it didn’t take long for Wycombe to get to grips with things.

Gauci had to race out and was fortunate as Onyedinma chased his own flick-on and knocked the ball over the keeper only for Heneghan to run around to rescue the situation.

Just before the 40-minute mark, there was a big concern for Vale as Johnson went down clutching his right hamstring and shaking his head.
