Even though its former operators are long gone, the Silverdale stink site continues to reek of notoriety. Phil Corrigan reports on concerns for its long-term future, as questions remain on who will fund the clean-up.

So, what's next for Walleys Quarry?

UNCERTAINTY still surrounds the long-term future of controversial landfill site Walleys Quarry, council leaders have been told.

The Silverdale landfill has been managed by the Environment Agency since the collapse of former operator Walleys Quarry Ltd at the start of this year.

But local residents and community leaders have been calling for the site to be permanently capped and restored to ensure that the landfill gas emissions that plagued the area for years never return.

Cabinet members at Newcastle Borough Council heard at their meeting on Tuesday that there has still been no confirmation that the Government will fund the restoration, with the cost likely to run into the millions of pounds.
